Convention of Bearings

broken image

Did you know that is for international standard conventions in bearings help denote complex bearing structures using simple 2nd drawings?

This makes us wonder what are conventions in bearings.

Before we jump in check out the previous part of the series to learn about what bearings are? ( link to related post )

Now there are three main representations of roller element bearings.

First, it's a representation of ball bearings. Balls in the rolling elements are represented by the use of circle between the races.

Second, are roller bearings. Here rollers are shown as square elements between the races. Third, are needle bearings which are denoted by rectangles between the races shown.

Here are the two types of variations in needle bearings, one along the radial direction and another along the axial direction.

Journal bearings consist of many representations due to their wide variety of types from simple dry bearings, which consist of just a shaft in a hole to hydrodynamic bearings which consists of a fluid pump that circulates a lubricant between the hole and the shaft.

One common representation is that consisting of an oil hole in the top and depicts the shaft as a solid cylinder and the hole with a hashed cross-section.

Hence we first saw what is the conventional representation is first in roller bearings and then in a journal bearings.
